Historic Twist in Hilsa Trade: India Sends 500 Tonnes of Hilsa to Bangladesh

India exports 500 tonnes of Hilsa to Bangladesh as falling local production drives imports, reversing the traditional fish trade between the two neighbours

Bussiness/Travel

New Delhi: In a major turnaround in the traditional Hilsa fish trade between India and Bangladesh, India has exported around 500 metric tonnes (5 lakh kg) of Hilsa to Bangladesh over the past two months.

The development marks a striking reversal in the usual trade pattern, as Bangladesh has traditionally been a major exporter of Hilsa to India. However, lower domestic Hilsa production in Bangladesh this year has reportedly pushed traders to source the popular fish from India.

According to the information shared, this is the first time Hilsa has been imported by Bangladesh from India, highlighting the impact of changing fish production and market demand.

The flow of Hilsa from India to Bangladesh is not over yet. Another 150–200 metric tonnes of the prized fish is expected to be exported from India to Bangladesh in the coming weeks.
