In a major development, Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced that Amaravati will officially become the capital of Andhra Pradesh from June 2, 2026. He stated that the Government of Andhra Pradesh has already passed a resolution in the Assembly on March 28, 2026, confirming Amaravati as the State Capital. The state has also requested the Government of India to include Amaravati as the official capital under legal provisions. Meanwhile, a crucial amendment bill to the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act is expected to be introduced in Parliament, which could finalize the capital status.
