Mundathikode (Kerala):

The death toll in the devastating fireworks explosion at Mundathikode has surged to 16, turning what was meant to be a festive gathering into a scene of horror and chaos. Several others remain critically injured, with doctors warning that the toll could rise further.

Eyewitnesses describe a massive blast ripping through the fireworks storage area, followed by a chain of explosions that sent debris flying across the venue. Panic-stricken crowds scrambled for safety as flames engulfed the site within seconds. Survivors allege that basic safety protocols were ignored, raising serious questions about the organizers and local authorities.

Sources indicate that improper storage of high-intensity explosives and lack of crowd control may have contributed to the tragedy. Anger is mounting among locals, with families of victims demanding strict accountability and immediate arrests. “This was not an accident, it was pure negligence,” a relative of one of the deceased said.

Kerala authorities have ordered a high-level probe, but critics argue that such investigations often end without real consequences. With repeated fireworks-related disasters in the state, the latest tragedy once again exposes systemic failures in enforcement and regulation
