Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay has announced a major expansion of the state’s cooperative crop-loan waiver scheme, offering additional relief to more than 1.38 lakh farmers.
Announcing the decision in the Tamil Nadu Assembly under Rule 110, Vijay said the government would provide an additional ₹953.06 crore in support despite financial constraints.
The latest decision takes the overall loan-waiver amount to around ₹6,220 crore, benefiting approximately 13.34 lakh farmers under the expanded scheme.
The Chief Minister described agriculture as the backbone of Tamil Nadu and stressed that supporting farmers was essential for the state’s prosperity. The announcement comes as the Vijay-led government marks 100 days in office, with farmer welfare emerging as a major focus of its policy agenda.The move is expected to provide significant financial relief to cultivators struggling with agricultural debt.
Under the revised scheme, cooperative farm loans up to ₹75,000 will be completely waived. Farmers with loans between ₹75,000 and ₹1 lakh will receive a waiver of up to ₹75,000, while loans above ₹1 lakh will be eligible for a maximum waiver of ₹35,000.
