April 7, 2026 : Tensions flared at a mining site operated by Vedanta Limited on Tuesday, leaving more than a dozen people injured after a violent clash broke out between workers, local protesters, and security personnel
According to initial reports, the confrontation began when a group of workers and residents staged a protest near the mine premises, raising concerns over working conditions, environmental impact, and alleged land-related issues.
The situation escalated quickly as security forces attempted to disperse the crowd. Eyewitnesses said stones were hurled from both sides, prompting police to resort to mild force, including lathi charge, to bring the situation under control. Several workers, police personnel, and local residents sustained injuries in the chaos. Some of the injured were rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment, while others were treated on-site.
Officials stated that the situation is now under control, with additional police forces deployed in and around the mining area to prevent further unrest. Authorities have also launched an inquiry into the incident to determine the exact cause of the clash and identify those responsible for instigating violence.
A spokesperson from Vedanta Limited said the company is committed to maintaining safety and open dialogue with stakeholders, adding that operations have been temporarily halted as a precautionary measure.
Local leaders have called for calm and urged the administration to address the grievances of the affected communities to avoid further escalation.
The incident once again highlights the recurring tensions between industrial projects and local populations, particularly over environmental and livelihood concerns.
