Thiruvananthapuram, May 14: Senior Congress leader V. D. Satheesan was unanimously elected as the leader of the Congress Legislature Party (CLP) on Thursday, clearing the way for him to become the next Chief Minister of Kerala. The decision comes after the Congress-led United Democratic Front secured a decisive victory in the 2026 Assembly elections.
Satheesan, a six-time MLA from Paravur and former Leader of the Opposition, emerged as the consensus choice after days of consultations involving the Congress high command. His appointment ends speculation over the chief ministerial race, which also included senior leaders such as K. C. Venugopal and Ramesh Chennithala
The Congress announced the decision after a CLP meeting attended by newly elected MLAs and senior party observers. With his election as CLP leader, Satheesan is expected to be invited by the Governor to form the next government and take oath as Chief Minister in the coming days
. Known for his sharp attacks on the previous Left Democratic Front government and his strong grassroots connect, Satheesan played a key role in leading the UDF’s successful campaign. His elevation marks a generational shift in Kerala Congress leadership.
The UDF’s return to power ends a decade-long rule of the LDF under Pinarayi Vijayan. Supporters across Kerala celebrated the announcement, expressing confidence that Satheesan will usher in a new phase of governance focused on development, transparency, and job creation
