Washington / Taipei / Beijing: May 16,2026

Tensions over Taiwan have escalated again after strong statements from both Taiwan’s Presidential Office and former U.S. President Donald Trump regarding the island’s security and political status.

Taiwan’s Presidential Office firmly stated that “Beijing has no right to make claims over Taiwan,” reaffirming its position on sovereignty. It also expressed appreciation for Trump’s “continued support for security in the Taiwan Strait since his first term,” highlighting ongoing concerns over regional military pressure from China.

In response, Trump commented on the sensitive nature of Taiwan’s political direction, saying, “Well, it's a risky thing when you go independent… they’re going independent.” He further warned that such moves could raise the risk of conflict, adding, “They want to get into a war… they figure they have the United States behind them.

” The remarks have sparked renewed debate over U.S. policy ambiguity in the region, with analysts warning that any miscalculation between China, Taiwan, and the United States could quickly escalate into a broader geopolitical crisis. Beijing continues to assert its claim over Taiwan, while Taipei maintains its democratic self-governance and rejects territorial pressure.
