Hyderabad Records Alarming Cancer Burden: 72 Cases Per Lakh, Second Highest in Telangana

Hyderabad raises alarm with 72 cancer cases per lakh, second highest in Telangana as per Cancer Atlas data. Experts warn rising urban health crisis, demand urgent action.

Breaking News

Hyderabad is emerging as a major concern on the state’s public health map, recording 72 cancer cases per lakh population, making it the second highest district in Telangana, according to findings cited from the latest Cancer Atlas data.

The figures highlight a disturbing rise in cancer incidence in urban centres, with Hyderabad showing significantly higher rates compared to several other districts in the state. Health experts indicate that lifestyle changes, environmental pollution, tobacco consumption, delayed diagnosis, and dietary patterns may be contributing factors behind the surge.

The report places Hyderabad among the most affected regions, raising serious questions about early detection systems and the effectiveness of preventive healthcare measures. Despite advanced medical infrastructure in the city, the rising numbers suggest that awareness and screening still remain inadequate for large sections of the population.

Public health analysts warn that if the current trend continues unchecked, the burden on hospitals and oncology care facilities in Hyderabad could increase sharply in the coming years. They stress the urgent need for mass screening programs, stronger anti-tobacco enforcement, and targeted awareness campaigns at the community level.
