Trump Pushes Pause Button as Israel-Iran Hostilities Ease

Israel and Iran temporarily halt attacks after U.S. intervention, easing immediate fears of a broader Middle East conflict while tensions remain high.

JERUSALEM/TEHRAN, June 9, 2026:

A fresh round of military tensions between Israel and Iran appeared to ease after an Israeli official said airstrikes on Iran were halted at the request of U.S. President Donald Trump. The development came amid growing international concern over a wider regional conflict.

Iran's military announced that its first wave of attacks against Israel since the April ceasefire had concluded, signaling a temporary de-escalation. Tehran, however, warned that stronger retaliation could follow if further attacks are launched against Iranian interests or its regional allies.

The exchange marked the most significant direct confrontation between the two countries since the ceasefire agreement earlier this year. Reports indicate that both sides carried out retaliatory strikes before diplomatic pressure, led by Washington, helped bring the situation under control.

Despite the pause in hostilities, tensions remain high across the Middle East. Both Israel and Iran have indicated they are prepared to respond forcefully if violence resumes, leaving the fragile calm vulnerable to further escalation.
