Leh in Ladakh was jolted by a 5.5-magnitude earthquake early Thursday morning, triggering tremors in the region and raising concerns among residents. The National Centre for Seismology (NCS) confirmed the seismic activity.

According to NCS data, the earthquake occurred at 6:05:15 AM IST at a depth of around 10 kilometres. The epicentre was recorded at 36.881°N latitude and 74.402°E longitude, with the quake located in the Leh, Ladakh region.

The relatively shallow depth meant that the tremors could be felt across parts of the region. Authorities and monitoring agencies are keeping a close watch on the situation following the earthquake.

No immediate reports of casualties or major structural damage had emerged in the initial reports. Officials are continuing to assess the situation and monitor for any further seismic activity.

The earthquake once again highlights the seismic vulnerability of the Himalayan region, where earthquakes are relatively frequent. Residents have been urged to remain alert and follow official safety advisories in case of further tremors
