Chandigarh: The proposed new charges on UPI payments are causing severe anger among petrol dealers. Petrol pumps in Punjab are considering halting UPI transactions exceeding ₹2,000. The petrol dealers' association has warned that they will protest if the proposed Merchant Discount Rate (MDR) is not withdrawn.
There are a total of 4,104 petrol pumps in Punjab. Dealers state that approximately 11-12 lakh UPI transactions occur daily at these pumps. They express concern that imposing additional charges on such transactions will place a significant financial burden on petrol pumps.
According to dealers' calculations, the proposed charges could lead to an additional burden of around ₹1.65 crore to ₹1.80 crore per month. They say that bearing this extra expense is challenging, especially when margins are already limited.
Dealers are demanding that this proposal be withdrawn immediately. Otherwise, they warn that they will consider not accepting UPI payments exceeding ₹2,000 and may resort to a strike in the next phase.
If the petrol pumps' decision comes into effect, it could directly impact consumers. Particularly, vehicle owners purchasing fuel in large quantities may have to opt for alternative payment methods. It is now interesting to see how the developments unfold regarding this dispute.
