Hyderabad: As preparations begin for the Ganesh festival, environmentalists and civic authorities are urging devotees to celebrate the festival in an eco-friendly manner without compromising on tradition and devotion.
The use of clay Ganesha idols instead of Plaster of Paris (PoP) idols can significantly reduce the environmental impact of immersion. Natural clay idols dissolve more easily in water, while PoP idols can remain in water for long periods and contribute to pollution.
Devotees are also encouraged to choose natural colours and eco-friendly decorations instead of chemical-based paints, plastic materials and thermocol. Reusable cloth, paper, flowers, leaves and other biodegradable materials can make festival decorations both attractive and environmentally responsible.
Another important step is responsible immersion. Wherever possible, devotees can opt for designated immersion ponds or artificial tanks provided by civic authorities. This can help protect lakes, rivers and other natural water bodies from pollution.
Organisers can also reduce plastic waste by avoiding single-use plastic bottles, plates and cups at pandals and encouraging reusable alternatives.
The message is simple: devotion and environmental responsibility can go hand in hand. By choosing eco-friendly idols, decorations and immersion practices, devotees can celebrate Lord Ganesha while protecting nature for future generations.
