Washington / Tehran | March 15, 2026 Trump Claims Iran’s Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei May Be Dead, Urges Tehran to ‘Surrender’ Former US President Donald Trump has sparked fresh controversy with dramatic claims about Iran’s leadership and the ongoing tensions in the Middle East. In a series of remarks, Trump said he had heard reports that Mojtaba Khamenei—widely believed by some analysts to be a key power figure in Iran—may be dead, though he provided no evidence to support the claim. “I am hearing that Iran Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei is dead. Iran desperately wants a ceasefire,” Trump said while commenting on the escalating regional situation. Trump also questioned why Iranian authorities had not publicly shown Khamenei in recent days. “Why has nobody been able to show Mojtaba Khamenei so far?” he asked, suggesting the lack of public appearances had fueled speculation. The  US president further urged Iran to take a decisive step to end tensions. “He should do something very smart for his country, and that’s surrender,” Trump said.

Focus on Strait of Hormuz

Trump also warned that international forces could take stronger action to secure the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most critical oil shipping routes. “We’re going to be sweeping the Strait of Hormuz very strongly, and we believe other countries will join us who are somewhat impeded from getting the oil,” he said.

There has been no official confirmation from the Iranian government regarding the claims about Mojtaba Khamenei. Iranian authorities have not issued any statement addressing the speculation. The remarks come amid heightened geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, with global markets closely watching developments around Iran and the Strait of Hormuz due to its critical role in global energy supply.
