Dhaka, April 4 In a decisive move to contain a sharp rise in pandemic infections, the government of Bangladesh has announced a nationwide shutdown for eight days starting Wednesday. According to official sources, all government and private offices will remain closed during the period, while public transport services—including buses, trains, and domestic flights—will be suspended. The restrictions are aimed at limiting movement and reducing transmission as health authorities report a significant spike in cases across the country. Emergency services such as healthcare, law enforcement, and essential supply chains will continue to operate. Authorities have also urged citizens to strictly follow safety protocols, including wearing masks and avoiding unnecessary travel. The latest surge has put pressure on hospitals, prompting the government to act swiftly to prevent the healthcare system from becoming overwhelmed. Officials indicated that further measures could be considered depending on how the situation evolves in the coming days. Public response remains mixed, with concerns over economic disruptions, particularly among daily wage workers and small businesses. However, health experts have largely supported the decision, emphasizing the need for immediate intervention to control the spread. The government is expected to review the situation before the end of the shutdown period and decide on the next course of action based on infection trends.
