Trump China Visit 2026 Delivers Boeing Deal but Leaves Key Trade and Taiwan Issues Unresolved

Trump’s China trip resulted in a 200-plane Boeing order and new trade dialogue, but major issues such as Taiwan, chip restrictions, and structural trade disputes remain unresolved

Beijing/Washington, May 15, 2026:

U.S. President Donald Trump concluded his much-publicized visit to China with a series of announcements aimed at projecting momentum in bilateral relations. However, the tangible outcomes were narrower than the optimistic rhetoric surrounding the trip.

The headline development was China’s agreement to purchase 200 aircraft from Boeing, providing a boost to the U.S. aerospace sector. While the order is substantial, analysts noted that expectations ahead of the visit were significantly higher, suggesting the deal was meaningful but not transformative.

Both governments also agreed to create new communication platforms to continue discussions on trade and investment issues. These mechanisms are intended to reduce friction and maintain dialogue, but no binding commitments were announced on deeper structural concerns such as industrial subsidies, market access restrictions, and intellectual property protections.

Technology remained a sensitive topic throughout the visit. Senior executives from Tesla, Nvidia, and Apple were present, signaling strong business interest in improved ties. Still, U.S. export controls on advanced semiconductors and artificial intelligence chips remain in effect, limiting any immediate breakthrough in the sector.

Diplomatically, Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping appeared to strengthen personal rapport. Yet the most contentious strategic issues—including Taiwan, regional security, and long-term geopolitical competition—were left unresolved.

Political and economic observers described the trip as a carefully managed effort to stabilize relations rather than a major reset. Both countries secured short-term benefits: improved optics, modest commercial gains, and a commitment to continue talking, while preserving their positions on core disputes.

The effectiveness of the visit will be judged over the next six to twelve months, as implementation of announced deals and ongoing negotiations reveal whether the temporary thaw can translate into durable progress.
