Tehran | July 2: Iran's Revolutionary Guards (IRGC) said security forces killed five alleged Kurdish militants during an operation in the country's northwest near the Iraqi border.
According to Iranian authorities, the group was intercepted after reportedly entering Iranian territory in West Azerbaijan province. The operation targeted members of an outlawed Kurdish opposition organization that Tehran accuses of carrying out cross-border attacks.
The incident comes amid heightened security operations in Iran's Kurdish border regions, where clashes between security forces and armed Kurdish groups have occurred periodically.
Iran has vowed to continue operations against what it describes as militant groups threatening national security, while Kurdish organizations have long accused Tehran of cracking down on political dissent in the region.
