Singapore: A Singapore Cabinet minister has stepped down after questions were raised over his personal conduct involving interactions with a woman, the Prime Minister's Office announced on Monday.
Prime Minister Lawrence Wong said the minister's behaviour did not meet the standards expected of political office holders, even though authorities found no evidence of criminal wrongdoing. Following an internal review, the minister submitted his resignation from the Cabinet, Parliament and the ruling People's Action Party (PAP).
In his resignation letter, the minister admitted he had exercised poor judgment and accepted responsibility for his actions. He said there was no physical relationship but acknowledged that his conduct failed to meet the high ethical standards expected of someone in public office.
The Prime Minister accepted the resignation, stressing that integrity, accountability and public trust are essential for all elected representatives and government leaders.
The government has appointed an interim minister to oversee the portfolio until a permanent replacement is named.
