WASHINGTON: U.S. Representative Nancy Mace has surprised the public by revealing a heavily tattooed look that she had largely kept hidden during her time in Congress. The South Carolina Republican showed off tattoos covering both arms in the opening montage of her new YouTube podcast, “Get Mace’d.”
Mace had previously disclosed that she received nine tattoos in rapid succession during 2023–24, a period she described as one of the most difficult chapters of her life. She said the tattoos helped her experience physical pain and were also a way to “reclaim” her body and identity.
The newly revealed artwork includes the word “Justice” on her arm, floral and animal imagery, and a line from Virginia Woolf’s Mrs Dalloway. The striking transformation has drawn widespread attention online, with social media users reacting to the contrast between Mace’s traditionally formal congressional image and her heavily tattooed appearance.
Mace has brushed aside the intense reaction, arguing that the focus on her tattoos is exaggerated and that there are more important issues facing the country. Her new podcast is expected to become a platform for political commentary as she prepares for life beyond Capitol Hill.
