Washington: In a significant diplomatic development amid the continuing conflict between Washington and Tehran, the United States has approved visas for a core Iranian delegation to attend the United Nations General Assembly in New York next week.
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian is expected to attend the high-level UN meetings, while Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi is also set to be part of the delegation, according to officials familiar with the decision.
The US State Department said the decision was made in line with Washington’s obligations as the host country of the United Nations. However, the Iranian delegation will be smaller than in previous years and will face restrictions on travel and the purchase of luxury goods.
The move comes against the backdrop of intense tensions between the United States and Iran. The decision to allow Iranian leaders into New York is expected to put the spotlight on diplomacy, the ongoing conflict and efforts to address the broader regional crisis during the UN gathering.
Pezeshkian is scheduled to address world leaders during the General Assembly’s high-level week, making his appearance one of the closely watched moments of this year’s UN meetings.
