WASHINGTON: Chinese President Xi Jinping arrived in Washington for a high-profile state visit, receiving an unusually personal welcome from U.S. President Donald Trump at Joint Base Andrews on Wednesday.
In a rare diplomatic gesture, Trump and First Lady Melania Trump personally greeted Xi and his wife, Peng Liyuan, on the tarmac instead of waiting for the Chinese leader to arrive at the White House. A 100-foot red carpet, military honor guard, national anthems and a ceremonial flyover featuring B-1 bombers formed part of the elaborate welcome.
Xi’s visit marks his first state visit to Washington in more than a decade. The three-day programme includes a formal White House arrival ceremony, military honours and a state dinner hosted by Trump and Melania Trump. The elaborate reception is also being seen as a reciprocal gesture following Trump’s high-profile visit to China earlier this year.
The diplomatic spectacle comes against the backdrop of major tensions between Washington and Beijing over trade, artificial intelligence, rare-earth supplies, Taiwan and China’s relationship with Iran. Both governments are seeking to manage differences while keeping high-level communication open.
The unusual airport welcome has therefore attracted global attention. While the ceremony highlights the importance Washington places on direct engagement with Beijing, the key focus will now shift to what Trump and Xi achieve in their closed-door discussions and whether the visit produces concrete progress on their major disputes.
