Hyderabad News

Hyderabad: The rare jewels belonging to the Nizam family of Hyderabad may soon have a new address. Reports indicate that the Ministry of Culture has begun preparations to transfer 173 exquisite pieces of jewelry, which have been under tight security for decades, to a new building.

This collection, featuring necklaces, bangles, rings, belts, and headpieces made of diamonds, emeralds, rubies, and pearls, has gained special recognition. The world-famous Jacob Diamond is also among these 173 pieces of jewelry.

From the Nizam treasury to the control of the central government...

These jewels, which were part of the royal wealth during the Asaf Jahi rulers' era, later came under the control of the Nizam family trusts. In the 1970s, a dispute arose regarding their future, leading to a prolonged legal battle. Ultimately, under the orders of the Supreme Court, the central government purchased the 173 pieces of jewelry.

Over ₹180 crores... Central government makes hefty payment for historical wealth

In 1994, the Supreme Court paved the way for the central government to purchase the 173 pieces of jewelry. According to court records, the value of the jewelry was determined to be ₹180.37 crores, along with an order to pay 6% interest. With this process, the jewelry came under the management of the central government.

From Mumbai to Delhi... Rarely on display!

After being acquired by the central government, the jewelry was initially stored in the RBI vault in Mumbai, as per legal records. They were later moved to Delhi. Occasionally, they have been displayed for public viewing at the National Museum. The intention to preserve these as part of the country's cultural heritage and make them accessible to the public was recorded during the purchase process.

Will they return to Hyderabad?

The intriguing developments surrounding the establishment of a new building for the Nizam jewelry, which has been stored in the capital for decades, are generating interest. Has a final decision been made regarding their permanent relocation to Hyderabad? Where will the new building be established? How will this exquisite wealth be made available for public viewing? There is growing anticipation for an official announcement on these matters.
