MIAMI, July 4:
Cabo Verde's dream FIFA World Cup journey ended in heartbreak after the tournament debutants suffered a dramatic 3-2 extra-time defeat to defending champions Argentina in the Round of 32.
Argentina took an early lead through Lionel Messi, but Cabo Verde responded with fearless attacking football and twice fought back to level the match. The African side looked capable of producing one of the biggest upsets in World Cup history before an own goal in extra time sent Argentina into the Round of 16.
One of Cabo Verde's most remarkable stories belongs to defender Roberto "Pico" Lopes. Before representing his country on football's biggest stage, Lopes worked as a mortgage adviser in Ireland and played semi-professional football. His international career began after receiving a LinkedIn message from Cabo Verde's coaching staff inviting him to join the national team.
The tiny island nation, making its first-ever World Cup appearance, won admirers across the globe with its fearless display against the reigning world champions. Goalkeeper Vozinha produced several outstanding saves, while the team's determination kept Argentina under pressure until the final moments.
Although their World Cup campaign ended in defeat, Cabo Verde left the tournament with their reputation enhanced, proving they could compete with the world's best and delivering one of the most inspiring underdog stories of the competition.
