Aichi-Nagoya: India’s contingent at the ongoing Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games is facing an accommodation crunch, with organisers reportedly reducing the room allocation for the Indian team after its arrival in Japan.
India’s Chef de Mission Sahadev Yadav acknowledged the shortage and said the contingent has been forced to arrange additional hotel accommodation to ensure athletes do not face further inconvenience.
As many as 18 additional hotel rooms have already been booked, while another 10 rooms are expected to be booked on Friday, Yadav said. The Sports Authority of India (SAI) and the Indian contingent have also made their own arrangements for hotels and transportation.
The accommodation issue is not the only challenge confronting the Indian contingent. Accommodation, transportation and accreditation-related difficulties have reportedly created hurdles during the Games.
Yadav, however, said India was not looking to blame the organisers and that the immediate priority was to ensure athletes remain comfortable and focused on their competitions.
The Games are being held without a conventional athletes’ village. Instead, organisers are relying on hotels, container-style accommodation and a cruise ship docked at the port to house participants.
Meanwhile, India’s flag-hoisting ceremony on Friday was also delayed and temporarily halted, adding to the organisational concerns surrounding the mega sporting event.
With Indian athletes competing for medals, the contingent is now working to resolve the accommodation and logistical issues while keeping the focus firmly on competition.
