Union Minister Nitin Gadkari has announced the approval of a massive ₹1,427.61 crore infrastructure project for the construction of a 4-lane Thiruvarur Bypass in Tamil Nadu. The ambitious project will come up on the Nagapattinam–Thanjavur section of NH-83 and will stretch across 14.9 kilometres, aiming to transform regional connectivity and traffic movement.
The project also includes the construction of two additional Railway Over Bridges (ROBs) on NH-129A and NH-134A, further strengthening transport infrastructure in the state. The Centre believes the project will play a crucial role in easing congestion and improving logistics efficiency across key economic corridors.
According to Gadkari, the strategic bypass will improve connectivity between major industrial cities like Tiruchirappalli and Coimbatore with important port towns such as Karaikal and Nagapattinam. Officials expect the enhanced road network to accelerate trade, transport, and regional economic activity.
The proposed bypass will begin from Adiyakkamangalam–Thandalai and pass through several important areas including Athipuliyur, Andipalayam, Kidaramkondan, Pallivaramangalam, Perumpugalur, Elavangarkudi, and Anaivadapathy Colony.
The alignment has been designed to divert heavy traffic away from crowded urban zones and commercial pockets of Thiruvarur town. Authorities say the project is expected to reduce travel time by nearly 15 minutes while significantly improving road safety. Daily commuters, transport operators, and pilgrims are likely to benefit from smoother movement and reduced bottlenecks once the bypass becomes operational.
The new alignment will also strengthen connectivity to SH-23, SH-65, and the famous Thyagaraja Swamy Temple, giving a boost to tourism and local business activity. The project is being seen as another major push by the Centre toward expanding highway infrastructure and economic growth in southern India.
