Chennai, July 3:
DMK MLA and former Tamil Nadu minister Anita R. Radhakrishnan was arrested on Friday after the Madras High Court rejected his anticipatory bail plea in a case related to allegedly derogatory remarks against Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay.
The case stems from a recent DMK public meeting held to mark the birth anniversary of late former Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi. During his speech, Radhakrishnan allegedly mocked Chief Minister Vijay, referring to his transition from the film industry to politics and criticizing his conduct in the Tamil Nadu Assembly.
Following a complaint filed by leaders of the ruling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), police registered a case against the DMK legislator. Soon after the High Court declined to grant him anticipatory bail on Friday morning, police took Radhakrishnan into custody while he was reportedly inspecting records at a local town panchayat office.
Reacting to the arrest, DMK MP Kanimozhi condemned the action, accusing the state government of using law enforcement agencies to target opposition leaders for political reasons
The arrest has intensified the political confrontation between the ruling TVK and the opposition DMK, with both parties trading allegations over freedom of speech and political vendetta.
