Dakshinayanam, one of the most spiritually significant periods in the Hindu calendar, begins on 17 July 2026, marking the start of an auspicious six-month phase dedicated to devotion, fasting, vows and self-reflection. The period commences when the Sun enters Cancer (Karka Rashi) and continues until it moves into Capricorn (Makara Rashi). According to Vedic tradition, this is regarded as the night of the Devas, making it an ideal time for spiritual practices including japa, tapa, meditation, scriptural recitation, vratas, nomulu, yajnas and charitable deeds. Chaturmasya Vratham will begin with the upcoming Tholi Ekadashi, during which Jagadgurus traditionally observe special spiritual disciplines. Dakshinayanam is also considered highly auspicious for Pitru Karyas, Tarpanam, Shraddha rituals and acts of charity. Devotees are encouraged to offer Arghya to Surya Bhagavan every morning, worship Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva, chant the Gayatri Mantra after Upanayanam, and recite sacred hymns such as Aditya Hridayam, Vishnu Sahasranamam, Bilvashtakam and Shiva Sahasranamam. Acts of charity, including Annadanam, Vastra Danam and Go Danam, are believed to bring immense spiritual merit. Vedic and Puranic traditions describe Dakshinayanam as a period that inspires inner transformation, self-realisation, detachment and spiritual growth, reminding devotees that sincere prayers, penance and righteous deeds performed during these six months yield exceptional blessings.
