Tensions flared in West Bengal after the Election Commission (EC) reportedly issued urgent instructions via WhatsApp to state police, directing them to intercept and check a vehicle allegedly linked to the wife of Abhishek Banerjee, a senior leader of the Trinamool Congress.
According to sources, the directive was part of intensified surveillance measures being carried out during the ongoing election phase. Police were asked to act swiftly on inputs and conduct a thorough inspection of the vehicle as part of routine enforcement of the Model Code of Conduct.
The development has sparked a political storm, with TMC leaders accusing central authorities of targeting opposition figures through “selective enforcement.” Party insiders claim the move is politically motivated and aimed at harassing leaders close to the party’s top leadership.
Meanwhile, election officials have defended the action, stating that no individual is above the law and all vehicles flagged under surveillance protocols must be checked, irrespective of political affiliations. Officials emphasized that such actions are standard procedure during elections to prevent illegal cash flow or material distribution.
The West Bengal Police have not issued an official statement yet, but sources confirm that checks were carried out as per EC instructions. It remains unclear whether any violations were found during the inspection.
