April 16, 2026:
Protests intensified in Tamil Nadu as leaders and workers of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam took to the streets opposing the Centre’s proposed delimitation exercise. Demonstrations were reported across several parts of the state, with a major flashpoint in Chennai.
Chief Minister M. K. Stalin led the charge, condemning the move as unfair to southern states. In a symbolic act of protest, DMK cadres publicly burned copies of the proposed bill, calling it a threat to Tamil Nadu’s political representation
. Protesters also raised black flags and shouted slogans against the central government, accusing it of attempting to redraw parliamentary constituencies in a way that could reduce the influence of states that have successfully controlled population growth.
The party leadership argued that population-based delimitation would disproportionately benefit northern states while penalizing regions like Tamil Nadu that implemented effective family planning policies over the decades.
The DMK has warned that the agitation could intensify in the coming days if the Centre moves forward with the proposal, setting the stage for a larger political confrontation between state and central leadership.
