New Delhi: Bollywood actor Swara Bhasker has triggered a fresh controversy by recalling her reaction to the Supreme Court’s 2019 Ayodhya verdict. Speaking on The Midnight Hour podcast, Bhasker said she was deeply upset by the judgment and felt it was unfair.
Bhasker said that after the verdict, she reached out to Muslim friends in her phonebook, including Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan and Aamir Khan. She recalled telling them that she was sorry, felt “ashamed” as a Hindu and did not agree with the judgment.
Her remarks have now reignited debate on social media, with several users criticising her position while others pointed to her right to express her personal views. Reports said the resurfaced comments quickly became a topic of discussion online.
The Ayodhya dispute concerned the site where the Babri Masjid stood before its demolition in 1992. On November 9, 2019, a five-judge Supreme Court bench unanimously directed that the disputed land be used for construction of a Ram temple and ordered that five acres of alternative land be allotted for a mosque.
Bhasker’s latest comments have once again placed her views on the Ayodhya verdict at the centre of a heated public debate, with reactions emerging across social media and entertainment circles.
