Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy has raised strong concerns over the Centre’s reported push for population-based delimitation of Lok Sabha seats, warning that it could prove “unjust” to southern and smaller states. While reiterating full support for women’s reservation, he cautioned against linking the two issues, calling it a misleading approach that could trigger regional imbalance.

Reddy emphasized that women’s reservation enjoys unanimous backing across the country and can be implemented immediately at the state Assembly level without controversy. However, he argued that delimitation based purely on population could disproportionately benefit northern states while penalizing southern states that have successfully controlled population growth.

In a sharp political message, the Chief Minister alleged that using women’s reservation as a “red herring” to push delimitation may yield short-term political gains for the Bharatiya Janata Party, but would ultimately harm national unity. “National interest must be above any party interest,” he asserted, stressing the need for a balanced and inclusive approach.

Reddy also suggested exploring alternative models instead of a simple pro-rata population formula for seat allocation. He indicated that innovative frameworks could ensure fair representation without undermining states that have performed better on development and demographic indicators.

Calling for a broader political dialogue, the Telangana CM urged the Centre to initiate consultations with all parties before moving forward on such a critical issue. He underscored that a national consensus is essential to safeguard the federal structure and ensure long-term stability and unity in the country.
