Chennai, May 10, 2026:
Tamil Nadu witnessed a landmark moment in its political history on Sunday as popular actor-turned-politician C. Joseph Vijay was sworn in as the Chief Minister of the state. The oath-taking ceremony was held at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Chennai, where Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar administered the oath of office.
The event marked a major turning point in Tamil Nadu politics, ending the long-standing dominance of Dravidian parties that have ruled the state for several decades. Vijay’s elevation to the top post is being widely seen as a major political realignment in the state.
The Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), led by Vijay, made a strong debut in the recently concluded Assembly elections by securing 108 seats, emerging as the single largest party. However, falling short of a clear majority, the party formed the government with the support of allied parties, ensuring a stable coalition.
The high-profile swearing-in ceremony was attended by several prominent leaders from national and state politics, including Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, BJP representatives, and other regional leaders. The presence of key political figures highlighted the significance of the event beyond state politics.
Thousands of supporters gathered at the venue, turning the ceremony into a massive celebration. Slogans and cheers filled the stadium as Vijay took oath, signaling strong public enthusiasm for the new leadership
. In his first address as Chief Minister, Vijay emphasized his commitment to clean governance, development, youth employment, and social welfare. He stated that his government would work towards transparency and people-centric administration, promising a fresh approach to governance in the state.
Political observers say Vijay’s entry into the top political office represents one of the most dramatic transformations in Tamil Nadu’s recent history, reshaping the state’s traditional political landscape and opening a new chapter in its governance.
