Bengaluru: The Congress on Monday launched a sharp attack on the BJP over its criticism of Karnataka's guarantee schemes, accusing the opposition party of hypocrisy and political opportunism. In a strongly worded statement, the ruling party said the BJP has "no moral right" to oppose welfare guarantees in Karnataka, alleging that the same party had ridiculed and resisted similar initiatives before adopting comparable promises in other states for electoral benefits.
Defending the state's flagship welfare programmes, Congress leaders reiterated their commitment to ensuring that benefits reach only genuine and eligible recipients.
They stressed that preventing misuse of government schemes remains a priority and warned that fraudulent claims not only violate the law but also deprive deserving citizens of assistance.
The party further accused the BJP of spreading misinformation for political gain and urged the opposition to cooperate in strengthening welfare delivery mechanisms rather than engaging in what it described as misleading campaigns.
The remarks come amid an ongoing political battle over the implementation, funding and beneficiary verification of Karnataka's guarantee schemes, which have remained a key plank of the Congress government's governance agenda.
