Bengaluru: The Karnataka government has directed colleges across the state to organise large-scale HIV screening and counselling camps after health authorities reported a significant rise in HIV cases among young adults, including thousands of students in the 18–25 age group.
The initiative will cover government, aided and private colleges, with a focus on early detection, awareness and timely medical care. Students will receive confidential HIV testing, counselling and education on prevention, safe health practices and reducing stigma.
Officials said the programme is intended to improve access to testing and treatment while addressing the increasing number of infections among young people. Those who test positive will be connected with free treatment and support services through the state's public health system.
Health authorities have urged students to participate in the screening process, emphasizing that early diagnosis and proper treatment can help people with HIV lead healthy, productive lives.
