A recent socio-economic analysis in Telangana has revealed stark disparities among communities, with Scheduled Castes (SCs) and Scheduled Tribes (STs) showing nearly three times higher backwardness compared to other social groups. The findings, based on a comprehensive backwardness index, have reignited debate over equitable development and targeted welfare policies in the state.
The Telangana Social, Educational, Employment, Economic, and Political Caste (SEEEPC) survey, analyzed by an Independent Expert Working Group (IEWG), reveals that Scheduled Castes (SCs) and Scheduled Tribes (STs) are approximately three times more backward than General Castes
According to the report, SC and ST communities lag significantly in key indicators such as education, healthcare access, income levels, and employment opportunities. While other backward classes (OBCs) and general categories have shown gradual improvement over the years, marginalized groups continue to face structural barriers that limit their upward mobility.
Experts point out that historical disadvantages, combined with gaps in policy implementation, have contributed to this widening inequality. Despite multiple welfare schemes, the benefits have not fully reached the most vulnerable sections, particularly in remote tribal regions and rural SC-dominated areas.
The data has triggered political reactions, with opposition parties demanding a review of existing reservation policies and more focused interventions. Social activists have also called for district-level monitoring and stronger accountability mechanisms to ensure that government schemes translate into real change on the ground.
The Telangana government is expected to respond with a detailed action plan, possibly including enhanced budget allocations for education, skill development, and healthcare in marginalized communities. As the debate intensifies, the backwardness index serves as a crucial reminder that inclusive growth remains an unfinished agenda.
