A fresh revelation by Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf has exposed the intensity of behind-the-scenes negotiations between Iran and the United States, highlighting a high-stakes maritime standoff during recent diplomatic engagements in Islamabad.

Speaking in an interview, Ghalibaf disclosed that Iranian officials directly confronted the US delegation over the presence of an American minesweeper operating near the strategically critical Strait of Hormuz. The incident reportedly unfolded amid sensitive negotiations, adding a layer of tension to already fragile talks between the two adversaries.

According to Ghalibaf, Tehran firmly reiterated its stance that the Strait of Hormuz remains under the control and sovereignty of the Islamic Republic. He emphasized that any foreign naval activity in the region without coordination would be viewed as a provocation, signaling Iran’s uncompromising posture on its territorial and strategic interests.

The disclosure sheds light on the volatile dynamics shaping US-Iran relations, where diplomacy continues to run parallel with military signaling. The presence of a US naval vessel during negotiations underscores the deep mistrust that still defines interactions between the two sides, even as efforts to prevent escalation remain ongoing.

Analysts warn that such incidents risk derailing fragile diplomatic channels, particularly at a time when regional stability hinges on restraint from both Washington and Tehran. The Strait of Hormuz, a vital artery for global oil shipments, remains a flashpoint where even minor confrontations could trigger wider geopolitical consequences.
