Iran has launched a fierce verbal counterattack against the United States after Washington announced a fresh wave of economic and trade pressure, accusing the US of waging “economic terrorism” against the Iranian people.
Iran’s Foreign Ministry condemned the newly announced measures, arguing that sanctions aimed at restricting Iran’s economy ultimately place additional pressure on ordinary citizens. Tehran described the measures as crimes against humanity and rejected Washington’s attempt to use economic pressure to force political concessions.
The latest escalation comes as US President Donald Trump threatens severe economic consequences for countries that continue financial, commercial or logistical dealings with Iran. Washington is seeking to isolate the Iranian economy and increase pressure on Tehran amid the continuing regional conflict.
Iran, however, has signalled that the new pressure will not force it to abandon what it describes as its right to defend its sovereignty and national interests. Tehran has repeatedly portrayed US sanctions as an attempt to weaken the country through economic warfare.
The confrontation marks another sharp escalation in the long-running US-Iran economic standoff, with the latest measures threatening to further disrupt trade, financial flows and Iran’s access to international markets. The US maintains extensive Iran-related sanctions covering sectors including finance, energy and trade.
