Moscow, September 20: Heavy drone attacks have caused a stir in the Russian capital Moscow and surrounding areas. Russian officials have reported that two lives have been lost in the Moscow region due to these attacks. A key oil refinery in Moscow was also targeted in the drone strikes.
According to Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin, officials have stated that over 1,600 drones have been shot down across Russia since Saturday. It has been revealed that approximately 450 drones were heading towards Moscow.
Officials reported that some drones reached the refinery premises, and another drone collided with an apartment building. Eyewitnesses told Reuters that thick smoke was billowing from the refinery area. However, the full extent of the damage to the refinery is not yet clear.
In the Ramenskoye area near Moscow, a 21-story building was damaged, prompting the evacuation of around 400 people, including 70 children, to safe areas. Governor Andrei Vorobyov also reported that several houses were damaged.
There has been no immediate response from Ukraine regarding these attacks. The timing of the strikes on the last day of Russia's parliamentary elections has further escalated tensions. The Moscow Mayor accused that these attacks were intended to disrupt the elections, while Ukraine has not responded to this allegation.
