Kathmandu: Nepal was hit by a devastating flash flood on Wednesday after a sudden surge in the Bhotekoshi River swept through parts of northern Rasuwa district near the Tibet border. Homes, vehicles, bridges, roads and infrastructure were damaged or washed away, triggering a massive search-and-rescue operation.

At least 16 people have been reported dead, while nearly 400 people remain unaccounted for, according to the latest reports. Among those missing are 105 Indian nationals, raising serious concern in India.

The Nepalese Army, police and other emergency teams have been deployed for rescue operations. Helicopters are being used to reach areas cut off by the floodwaters and debris, while authorities have issued alerts in several downstream districts.

India extends helping hand

 Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with Nepal Prime Minister Balendra Shah and expressed condolences over the loss of lives. Modi assured Nepal that India was ready to provide all possible humanitarian and relief assistance, with Indian teams coordinating with authorities on rescue and relief efforts. India is also preparing relief materials for the flood-hit areas as the rescue operation continues.
