NEW DELHI, October 16: Delhi is bracing for heightened security as the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) has called for a Tiranga Rally at Connaught Place on Friday evening, demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged irregularities in the electoral rolls revision process.
The rally, scheduled for 5 PM, faces uncertainty after Central Park at Connaught Place was reportedly closed for two days. Authorities have stepped up security across the national capital, deploying around 6,000 police personnel and 200 companies of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) in phases. Traffic restrictions in central Delhi are expected to begin at 3 PM, according to the supplied report.
Electoral Roll Revision Sparks Political Showdown
The CJP and opposition parties have intensified their protests, alleging large-scale irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. They claim that more than 13 crore voter names have been deleted, while the Election Commission has rejected the allegations and maintained that eligible voters can enrol again.
Protesters have also called for Tiranga demonstrations in other parts of the country to oppose the reported arrests of CJP leaders ahead of the Delhi rally, escalating the political confrontation over electoral transparency.
The rally has also triggered concern among Connaught Place traders, who fear disruption to business and livelihoods. The Supreme Court declined an urgent hearing on a petition filed over the potential impact, while highlighting the need to protect traders from undue hardship.
The Delhi High Court, meanwhile, recorded the police assurance that the rally would be regulated in accordance with the law rather than completely prohibited. With security tightened and traffic curbs looming, the proposed demonstration has put the national capital on alert.
