KANSAS: US President Donald Trump has triggered fresh controversy by declaring that he was “testing” NATO when Washington sought the alliance’s help in the US-Israel war against Iran. His remarks have put the spotlight on tensions within the Western alliance as the conflict continues.
Speaking in Kansas, Trump questioned whom the United States could negotiate with in Iran, claiming that the country’s leaders were “gone.”
“I don’t know who the hell to negotiate with,” Trump said, highlighting the uncertainty surrounding potential diplomatic talks with Tehran.
Trump’s admission that the request for NATO assistance was a “test” raises questions about Washington’s expectations of its allies and the future of transatlantic cooperation. At the same time, his claims about Iran’s leadership add another layer of uncertainty to efforts to find a diplomatic path out of the conflict.
The big question now: If Washington is seeking negotiations, who would represent Iran at the table? Trump’s remarks have brought that question into sharp focus
