Mumbai: Actor Shivani Pilgaonkar has voiced strong concerns about the growing trend of stereotyping in the entertainment industry, saying that performers are often boxed into fixed image-based roles.
She pointed out that despite the expansion of OTT platforms and increased content production, creative casting choices are still limited in many cases, with actors repeatedly offered similar kinds of characters based on their past performances.
According to Shivani, this pattern restricts artistic growth and prevents actors from exploring their full range. She emphasized that storytelling can become more meaningful only when creators are willing to take risks with casting and character design.
The actress noted that many talented performers are unable to break out of “image traps” created early in their careers, which eventually affects the variety of roles they receive.
Her comments have triggered fresh debate within the film and digital entertainment space, with several industry voices echoing the need for more flexible and experimental casting approaches.
Shivani’s statement adds to ongoing conversations about reforming casting practices in Indian cinema to encourage originality, inclusivity, and better representation across genres.
