Indonesia has expressed strong caution regarding a proposal by the United States Department of Defense seeking expanded military overflight access across its airspace, signaling concerns over sovereignty and regional stability.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Indonesia stated that any decision involving foreign military movement must strictly respect Indonesia’s territorial integrity and long-standing policy of neutrality. Officials emphasized that Jakarta will carefully evaluate the implications before granting any approval.
Sources indicate the proposal is part of broader strategic efforts by the United States to strengthen military logistics and surveillance capabilities in the Indo-Pacific region, particularly amid rising geopolitical tensions. However, Indonesia remains wary of being drawn into power rivalries.
A senior Indonesian diplomat noted that while bilateral ties with Washington remain important, Jakarta prioritizes maintaining balance and avoiding actions that could escalate tensions with neighboring countries, including China.
Security analysts say Indonesia’s response reflects its traditional “free and active” foreign policy doctrine, which avoids alignment with major power blocs. Any perceived tilt could trigger diplomatic friction within the Association of Southeast Asian Nations.
The development underscores growing strategic competition in the Indo-Pacific, where nations like Indonesia are increasingly navigating complex choices between cooperation and caution.
