New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi stated that India needs to expand its representation in the Olympic sports. He addressed the youth and athletes virtually during the 'Khelo India Samvad – Khel Ki Baat, PM Ke Saath' event held on the occasion of National Sports Day. This program is engaging over 800,000 youth across 1,600 locations nationwide.
Modi emphasized the need to change the situation where India is unable to achieve even minimal representation in many sports at the Olympics. He suggested that only if a large number of Indian youth step into new sports like surfing and sport climbing, there will be an opportunity to increase the number of Olympic medals.
With an eye on the 2036 Olympics, the 'Khelo India Samvad' focused on recognizing talent in a scientific manner, strengthening sports infrastructure, and attracting youth towards sports.
Sports for nation-building, not just medals!
Modi remarked that sports should not be limited to merely achieving medals. He stated that sports should play a crucial role in nation-building by fostering discipline, fitness, and leadership qualities, which is the direction of the central government.
Several sports personalities, including Union Sports Minister Anurag Thakur, participated in the event. The government revealed that it will collect suggestions and opinions from the youth regarding the 2036 Olympics to utilize them for the development of the sports sector.
