NEW DELHI: In a major political shock ahead of the West Bengal Assembly by-elections, the Election Commission of India has temporarily barred both rival factions of the Trinamool Congress from using the partyâs name and its reserved âTwo Flowers and Grassâ election symbol.
The stunning interim move means neither faction can contest the upcoming bypolls using the familiar TMC identity or its iconic election symbol, escalating the bitter battle over control of the party.
The EC has directed the rival factions to seek separate names and election symbols for the by-elections, turning the internal dispute into a high-stakes electoral showdown.
The decision comes at a crucial time for West Bengal politics, with the battle over the TMC name and symbol now spilling directly into the electoral arena.
The Commissionâs action is temporary and does not amount to a final decision on ownership of the party name or symbol. The larger dispute remains to be decided under the applicable election-symbol rules.Â
BIG QUESTION NOW: WHO WILL CONTROL THE TMC IDENTITY? The upcoming Bengal bypolls could see both factions taking the fight to voters under entirely different names and symbols.
