NEW DELHI: Russian President Vladimir Putin has called for a major overhaul of the United Nations Security Council, arguing that Africa, Asia and Latin America must receive greater representation in the powerful global body.
Speaking at the BRICS summit in New Delhi, Putin said the UN Security Council needs to reflect the changing balance of global political and economic power. He argued that expanding representation would make the United Nations more effective and better aligned with today’s geopolitical realities.
Putin highlighted the lack of permanent African representation on the Security Council, despite Africa accounting for more than a quarter of the UN’s membership. The African Union has for years demanded a greater role in the council, including permanent representation.
The Russian leader also backed reforms to major global economic institutions, including the International Monetary Fund, World Bank and World Trade Organization. He said these institutions must be updated to reflect current political and economic realities.
