NEW DELHI: The high-voltage battle over who controls the “real” Trinamool Congress (TMC) has reached a decisive stage, with the Election Commission of India (ECI) likely to issue an interim ruling on September 17.
The political showdown has intensified as rival TMC factions led by Mamata Banerjee and Ritabrata Banerjee stake competing claims to the party’s identity, organisation and coveted ‘Jora Phool’ election symbol.
SYMBOL WAR REACHES FLASHPOINT
The dispute has gained urgency ahead of the upcoming Nandigram and Rejinagar bypolls, where both factions have announced candidates. The ECI’s decision could determine which camp gets to use the party’s established election symbol in the crucial contests.
The poll panel has heard representatives of both sides and sought additional documents. The Mamata-led faction has been asked to submit further material by September 16, while the ECI has indicated that a hearing could take place on September 17 at 4 pm if required.
SEPTEMBER 17: BIG DAY FOR TMC The coming days could prove critical for both camps. The ECI’s interim ruling may have an immediate political impact, particularly with the September 19 nomination withdrawal deadline approaching.
The central question now looms large: Who will emerge with the TMC name and the powerful ‘Jora Phool’ symbol?
TMC’S BIGGEST POWER SHOWDOWN IS NOW HEADING FOR A SEPTEMBER 17 CLIMAX.
