Karnataka Udupi, August 9, 2026:

The daylight killing of Congress leader and former Mudrangady Gram Panchayat president David D’Souza has triggered a widening investigation, with police now arresting three alleged shooters from Uttar Pradesh and gradually piecing together what appears to be a coordinated contract killing.

D’Souza was shot dead near a church in the busy Mudrangady area of Udupi district. CCTV footage reportedly shows the attackers arriving on a motorcycle, approaching him, opening fire, and fleeing the scene within moments. Investigators believe the murder was not spontaneous but the result of a pre-planned contract killing linked to a long-standing financial and business dispute.

UP Link Emerges in Murder Probe

As the investigation progressed, police traced the alleged shooters to Uttar Pradesh, marking a key development in the case. Their movements before and after the attack are now under close scrutiny, with investigators reconstructing travel routes, contacts, and logistical support networks.

The case is increasingly being viewed through the lens of an organized contract killing, with focus shifting to identifying the individuals who allegedly planned, financed, and coordinated the operation. While arrests have been made, officials say the exact roles of each suspect are still being verified.

CCTV Becomes Key Evidence

CCTV footage from the area has become central to the investigation, offering a minute-by-minute account of the attack. D’Souza was reportedly stepping out of his office and moving toward his vehicle when he was approached and shot at close range. Police believe the attackers had mapped out both the strike and escape in advance, with possible accomplices positioned nearby to assist in their getaway. Investigators are now working to connect the dots between the shooters on the ground and those suspected of orchestrating the crime from behind the scenes.

 Financial Dispute Under Scanner

At the heart of the probe is a suspected financial dispute linked to a major power-plant-related contract. Investigators are examining whether this dispute escalated into a motive strong enough to trigger an alleged contract killing involving out-of-state shooters.

Authorities are currently interrogating the arrested suspects to determine who commissioned the attack, who funded it, and how the operatives were recruited and transported to Udupi. Each new detail is expected to help police move closer to identifying the alleged mastermind behind the killing.
