New Delhi, May 15:
In a fresh blow to household budgets, fuel prices have been increased across the country, triggering sharp criticism from opposition parties and frustration among consumers already grappling with rising living costs.
Petrol prices have gone up by ₹3.14 per litre, while diesel now costs ₹3.11 more per litre. Compressed Natural Gas (CNG), widely used by public transport and private vehicles, has also become costlier by ₹2 per kilogram.
The latest increase is expected to push up transportation costs, which could have a cascading effect on the prices of vegetables, milk, groceries and other essential commodities. For millions of middle-class and low-income families, the hike adds to concerns over inflation and shrinking disposable incomes.
The Indian National Congress attacked the move, alleging that the price increase came immediately after the conclusion of Assembly elections. Party leaders accused the government of postponing difficult decisions until after voting and warned that more economic burdens could follow in the coming months.
Consumers across the country expressed anger over the sudden rise, saying every increase in fuel prices directly affects daily life. With commuting, cooking and goods transportation set to become more expensive, the hike has reignited debate over inflation and the financial pressure facing ordinary Indians
