KOLKATA, August 19, 2026:
A massive fire erupted at a hotel on Mirza Ghalib Street in central Kolkata in the early hours of Wednesday, triggering a deadly inferno that claimed nine lives, including six men, two women and a child.
The blaze broke out at around 2:00 AM, when most guests were asleep, turning the hotel into a death trap. Thick, toxic smoke rapidly engulfed the building, leaving victims trapped inside and causing fatal burns and smoke inhalation.
According to the information available, all nine victims were Bangladeshi nationals, making the tragedy even more shocking. The hotel is located in the busy central Kolkata area near New Market and Free School Street, where the incident sent panic through the neighbourhood during the night.
Firefighters rushed to the spot and launched a rescue operation as flames and dense smoke spread through the premises. The exact cause of the fire, the circumstances in which the victims became trapped and possible safety violations are expected to be investigated by the authorities.
The deadly blaze has once again raised serious questions over fire safety, emergency exits and preparedness in hotels operating in densely populated parts of Kolkata. Further details on the victims, the hotel and the official investigation are awaited.
