New Delhi, June 1: Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president Y. S. Sharmila is likely to be nominated to the Rajya Sabha from Karnataka, according to party sources. The move is said to be in line with an assurance reportedly given by the Congress leadership when Sharmila joined the party.
With four Rajya Sabha seats falling vacant in Karnataka, the Congress high command has reportedly decided to allocate one of the seats to Sharmila. Since the Congress is currently in power in Karnataka, her election to the Upper House is expected to be relatively smooth.
Party insiders say the decision reflects the Congress leadership’s strategy to strengthen its presence in southern India. By elevating Sharmila to the Rajya Sabha while she continues as APCC chief, the party hopes to reinforce its political outreach in Andhra Pradesh and neighboring states.
The development comes days after Sharmila met senior Congress leaders, including Rahul Gandhi and K. C. Venugopal, in New Delhi. Following those meetings, speculation grew that she was being considered for a Rajya Sabha berth.
Congress leaders believe Sharmila’s entry into Parliament could help the party rebuild its organizational strength in Andhra Pradesh while enhancing its visibility across the southern region.
